How to Calculate How Many Wallpaper Rolls You Need

Wallpaper adds texture and personality to any room — though if you prefer a simpler finish, our paint calculator can estimate paint for the same walls. Getting the right number of rolls avoids costly shortages where dye lots might not match. This guide walks through the calculation, the roll sizes you will encounter on European and international labels, a worked example for a standard bedroom, and how to adjust for doors, windows, sloped ceilings, and irregular wall shapes.

The Wallpaper Calculation Formula

Rolls needed = (Room Perimeter × Room Height) ÷ Usable Area per Roll

The usable area per roll depends on the pattern repeat:

• No pattern repeat: Full roll length is usable
• With pattern repeat: Each strip loses material to pattern alignment

2. Measure room height — Floor to ceiling, typically 2.4–2.5 m in Europe.

Wallpaper Roll Sizes Around the World

Roll dimensions vary significantly by region, so always confirm the spec on the label before calculating. Buying based on the wrong assumed size is one of the most common reasons people run out mid-job.

Our calculator defaults to the European 53 × 1005 cm standard. If you are buying imported or designer wallpaper, override the width and length fields with the values printed on your roll label — even small differences (52 vs 53 cm) compound across an entire room.

Worked Example: A Standard 4×3 m Bedroom

Consider a typical European bedroom: 4 m long × 3 m wide × 2.4 m ceiling height, with one 1.9 m² door and one 1.5 m² window.

• Wall perimeter: 2 × (4 + 3) = 14 m
• Total wall area before openings: 14 × 2.4 = 33.6 m²
• After deducting door + window: 33.6 − 1.9 − 1.5 = 30.2 m²
• Number of strips needed (53 cm wide): 14 ÷ 0.53 = 26.4 → round up to 27 strips
• Strip length needed (with 10 cm trim margin): 2.4 + 0.1 = 2.5 m
• Strips per 10.05 m roll, plain pattern: 10.05 ÷ 2.5 = 4 strips per roll
• Rolls needed (plain): 27 ÷ 4 = 6.75 → 7 rolls
• Rolls needed (with 64 cm pattern repeat): strip length becomes 2.5 + 0.64 = 3.14 m, so 10.05 ÷ 3.14 = 3.2 → 3 strips per roll → 27 ÷ 3 = 9 rolls

The pattern repeat alone adds two rolls — roughly EUR 30–80 of extra material — so always check the label before placing the order. Then add one safety roll on top to cover damaged strips and dye-lot mismatches.

Understanding Pattern Repeat

Paste Quantity Reference

Paste choice depends on wallpaper type. Heavy non-woven and vinyl wallpapers need stronger paste; lining paper and lightweight prints work with standard mixes. The table below assumes one pack of paste at typical European concentrations.

Always mix powdered paste 10 minutes before hanging so it can swell and thicken. Pre-mixed paste is faster and more consistent for beginners but costs about 30–50% more per roll covered.

Adjusting for Doors, Windows, and Irregular Rooms

The simple "perimeter × height" formula assumes a perfect rectangle. Real rooms rarely are. Use these adjustments:

• Doors and windows — Subtract their area from the total wall surface only if they are larger than 1 m². Smaller openings should be ignored, since the offcuts above and below rarely produce a usable strip.
• Sloped ceilings (loft conversions) — Treat each sloped wall as a triangle: area = ½ × base × height. Add this to your perimeter calculation, but expect 5–10% more waste because of the diagonal cuts.
• Chimney breasts and alcoves — Add their additional surface area (front + two sides) to the perimeter. A standard 1 m wide × 0.4 m deep chimney breast adds roughly 1.8 m of perimeter at full ceiling height.
• Bay windows — Measure the inside surface as separate flat segments and add them; do not approximate as a curve.
• Stairwells — Use the longest wall height (top landing to bottom of stairs) when calculating roll count. Strip length must clear that drop in one piece.

Choosing Between Wallpaper Types

Roll counts are identical regardless of wallpaper type, but the paste and prep-work differ. Here is how the main families compare:

• Paste-the-paper (traditional) — Cheapest. You apply paste to the back of each strip. Slowest hanging method. Best for lining paper and light prints.
• Paste-the-wall (non-woven) — Most common modern option. Paste goes directly on the wall, the dry strip is hung onto it. Fast, clean, easy to remove. Premium-priced.
• Vinyl-coated — Wipeable surface, good for kitchens and bathrooms. Heavier, needs heavy-duty paste and a seam roller.
• Solid vinyl / heavy-duty — Used in hallways and rentals. Highly durable but the seams are visible if not rolled flat.
• Grasscloth, fabric, and other natural materials — Highly textured, no pattern matching possible, but seams are always visible. Always order 15–20% extra and hire a professional if you have not hung wallpaper before.
