How to Calculate Materials for a Bathroom Renovation

A bathroom renovation involves multiple materials — tiles, adhesive, grout, waterproofing, and fixtures. Getting the quantities right avoids costly delays and emergency trips to the tile shop. Our bathroom calculator handles all the maths so you can focus on design choices.

Bathroom Tiling Reference

Surface Tile Size Coverage per Tile Tiles per sqm (inc. 3mm grout)
Floor 20x20 cm 0.04 sqm 25 tiles
Floor 30x30 cm 0.09 sqm 11 tiles
Wall 25x33 cm 0.0825 sqm 12 tiles
Wall 20x25 cm 0.05 sqm 20 tiles
Mosaic sheet 30x30 cm (sheet) 0.09 sqm 11 sheets

Smaller floor tiles create more grout lines, which improves grip on wet surfaces. This is why 20x20cm remains the standard for bathroom floors, especially in walk-in showers where the floor must slope to a drain.

Materials Breakdown per sqm

Material Quantity per sqm Unit Cost per Unit
Floor tiles (20x20cm) 25 tiles tile EUR 1.20 each
Wall tiles (25x33cm) 12 tiles tile EUR 2.10 each
Tile adhesive 3 kg kg EUR 0.48/kg
Grout 0.5 kg kg EUR 8/kg
Waterproofing membrane 1 sqm (wet areas) sqm EUR 15/sqm
Waterproofing liquid 0.5 L (wet areas) L EUR 5/L

These rates are for standard bathroom products. Premium tiles, rapid-set adhesive, and anti-mould grout cost 20-50% more but offer better durability in high-moisture environments.

Fixture Installation Costs

Every bathroom needs fixtures. Whether you install them yourself or hire a bathroom fitter, budget for these:

Fixture Supply Cost Installation Cost Total Installed
Toilet EUR 100-400 EUR 120 EUR 220-520
Basin + vanity EUR 80-350 EUR 120 EUR 200-470
Shower enclosure EUR 150-600 EUR 120-240 EUR 270-840
Bath EUR 120-800 EUR 120-240 EUR 240-1040
Heated towel rail EUR 50-200 EUR 120 EUR 170-320

Waterproofing Requirements

Building regulations require tanking in all wet areas. The minimum waterproofed zone covers the shower floor and walls to 1.8m height. For a full wet room, the entire floor and all walls need tanking.

Apply waterproofing membrane in two coats with 24 hours drying between coats. Overlap joints by 50mm and embed reinforcing tape in the first coat at all internal corners. Once waterproofed, the surface is ready for tiling with flexible adhesive.

Budget Comparison

Budget Level Tiles Fixtures Labour Total (6 sqm bathroom)
Budget EUR 200-400 EUR 300-600 EUR 800-1200 EUR 1500-2500
Mid-range EUR 400-800 EUR 600-1200 EUR 1200-2000 EUR 3000-5000
Luxury EUR 800-2000 EUR 1200-3000 EUR 2000-4000 EUR 6000-12000

The biggest cost variable is the fixtures. A budget toilet and basin set costs EUR 200, while a premium wall-hung suite starts at EUR 800. Tiles are the next variable — porcelain at EUR 20/sqm vs natural stone at EUR 80/sqm makes a significant difference on 18+ sqm of tiled surface.

If you are renovating the kitchen at the same time, our kitchen renovation calculator helps you estimate backsplash tiles, cabinet paint, and countertop materials. For the rest of the house, check the paint calculator to estimate wall paint and the tile calculator for other tiling projects.

These calculations are estimates only. Actual requirements may vary depending on surface conditions, product specifications, and installation methods. Always consult a qualified professional for precise measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your floor area and how high you tile the walls. For a standard 3x2m bathroom with half-wall tiling (1.2m), you need approximately 165 floor tiles (20x20cm) and 160 wall tiles (25x33cm), including 10% waste. Use our calculator for exact numbers.
Materials alone for a standard bathroom (6 sqm) cost EUR 500-1200 depending on tile quality and fixtures. Professional installation adds 50-100% on top. A full budget bathroom renovation runs EUR 1500-3000, mid-range EUR 3000-6000, and luxury EUR 6000-12000+.
Yes. Building regulations require waterproofing (tanking) in wet areas — at minimum the shower zone floor and walls to 1.8m height. Skipping waterproofing risks structural damage, mould, and invalidates most tile warranties.
20x20cm tiles are the most popular for bathroom floors. They allow enough grout lines for drainage slope (important in walk-in showers), are easy to cut around fixtures, and come in the widest range of styles. Larger tiles (30x30cm+) suit bigger bathrooms.
A small bathroom (under 6 sqm) takes 3-5 days DIY, including tiling, waterproofing, and grouting. A medium bathroom takes 5-8 days. Professionals are typically 30-40% faster. Allow extra time for fixture installation, plumbing changes, or moving walls.
