EU Cost Index Reports

European Drywall Cost Index 2026

Drywall is the hidden workhorse of European renovation. The sheets cost next to nothing — €3–6 per square metre. But the skilled finishing work (taping, mudding, sanding) is where the cost lives, making drywall one of the most labour-intensive trades we've measured.

European Fencing Cost Index 2026

Fencing is the most common boundary project in Europe — and often the first renovation a new homeowner tackles. The 2x cost spread across the EU is moderate, but the hidden variable isn't which country you're in. It's what's under the ground.

European Decking Cost Index 2026

Decking is the renovation project where material choice matters more than which country you're in. A composite deck in Romania costs more than a softwood deck in Denmark. We used Eurostat's 2024 labour cost data to calculate what professional decking installation actually costs across 18 EU countries.

European Insulation Cost Index 2026

Insulation is the renovation that pays for itself — but how fast depends on where you live. We used Eurostat's 2024 labour cost data to calculate what professional loft insulation actually costs across 18 EU countries.

European Tiling Cost Index 2026

Tiling is the trade where craftsmanship matters most — a bad tiler leaves you with cracked tiles and failed waterproofing. We used Eurostat's 2024 labour cost data to calculate what professional bathroom tiling actually costs across 18 EU countries.

European Painting Cost Index 2026

Painting is the most labour-intensive renovation trade — and the one where your country matters most. We used Eurostat's 2024 labour cost data to calculate what professional interior painting actually costs across 18 EU countries.

European Flooring Cost Index 2026

European Roofing Cost Index 2026

Roofing is the most labour-intensive renovation trade, and it shows: the EU cost spread is the widest we've measured. A full re-roof on a standard semi-detached house costs 2x more in Copenhagen than in Bucharest. We break down why.

European Solar Panel Installation Cost Index 2026

Solar panels are a global commodity — the same Jinko or Longi panel costs roughly the same whether it's installed in Copenhagen or Bucharest. Pre-subsidy, a 4 kWp system still costs 37% more in Denmark than Romania. But when grants and 0% VAT regimes are included, the ranking re-orders — and Germany's 19% VAT exemption is worth more than most countries' direct grants.

European Heat Pump Installation Cost Index 2026

Before grants, installing a heat pump costs 61% more in Denmark than in Romania. After subsidies, the ranking flips: Ireland becomes the cheapest country in Europe to install a heat pump, and Germany halves its effective cost. Policy, not price, is defining the EU heat pump market in 2026.

Methodology

Each Cost Index report follows the same methodology. We combine two layers of data to produce country-level renovation cost estimates:

  1. Eurostat baseline — We take the Construction Cost Index (CCI) from Eurostat's sts_copi_q dataset to compute a relative cost multiplier for each country. Germany is the reference (index = 1.00).
  2. Absolute calibration — We anchor the index to real-world costs using a manually researched German baseline: average material costs from major retailers plus typical labour rates from trade associations.
  3. Range estimation — Low/high ranges are derived from the baseline cost ± regional variance factors. Budget and premium tiers use category-specific multipliers (e.g. 0.6× for basic, 1.5× for high-end finishes).

Full technical details and the generation scripts are open source. Each CSV is published with a CC-BY-4.0 license — cite RenoQuant as the source and use the data freely.
